Benefit statements Q & A

classic questions

My automatic pension lump sum is shown as less than three times my pension – why?

If you have a ‘WPS debt’ because you did not pay Widow’s Pension Scheme contributions before 31 May 1971, your cash lump sum will be reduced to pay these arrears.

The lump sum will also be reduced to cover family benefits on your enhanced service if you were to leave on early or ill health retirement. You can choose to pay additional monthly contributions to reduce or eliminate these deductions. Ask your pensions administrator if you want to know more.

What benefits are payable if I get married after I take my pension?

If you are single and you marry after leaving service, the dependants' pension benefits payable will be based on your service since 6 April 1978 for male officers or 6 April 1988 for female officers. You will be given an estimate of these benefits when you leave.

The reckonable service on which the widow(er)’s pension is based may be enhanced, and a deduction made from the lump sum death benefit to pay for this enhancement.
